And the Dumpsite Holds Them All

My friend shook his head when I tossed a PET bottle into a recycle bin.

Friend: Do you know where the segregated paper, plastic and glass all go after this? The SAME dumpsite.

Me: Huh?

Friend: The efforts to make Hong Kong green is only superficial. The truth is no so rosy. It makes no difference at the end of the day whether you, an individual, segregate your trash or not. There ain’t such thing as “recycling”. Everything goes to the dumpsite.

Me: *incredulous* What’s the point if only the  people are putting in all the efforts to make Hong Kong a sustainable city, and the government doesn’t care beyond that?!

Friend: *matter-of-factly* Well, welcome to Hong Kong.

Is that true???? In Singapore I know they do attempt to recycle the stuff. I have heard that if people still throw the wrong items into the wrong bins, especially wet and dirty stuff in, then the items which were supposed to be recycled may be tainted beyond salvage.

Haha. I would love to know that, myself :) But, after doing a brief google, it did seem so.. :'( I’ll try to find out more :D

Omg! That means we have to be more than careful discarding unwanted items! Thanks for sharing! :) It is rather horrid that what is supposed to be recyclable becomes but another piece of garbage. :'(

yep, your friend is right, I heard about this too. The gov is just trying out the bins to see how many people would actually separate, but they all end up in the dump sites. Just like the plastic bag tax, which is really stupid because it only promote people to collect so called “recycle” bags that use up more plastics. Orinigally the 50 cents a bag collected is used to raise environmental awareness, now, the gov is planning to give the 50 cents to all the retailers and stores.
